Selena Marie Gomez was born to parents, Mandy Teefey and Ricardo Gomez on July 22nd 1992. She grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas after being named after famous singer Selena Quintanilla Perez.
Selena has Hispanic Heritage, that she is very proud of. This is because her mother is part Italian and her Father, Mexican. She is a Christian and used to wear a promise ring . Mandy was a stage actress, and Selena says she inherited her love of performing from this.
Selena was raised alone by her mother, Mandy after her parents divorced when she was 5 years old. Her mother remarried in 2006 to Brain Teefey who Selena treats like her real father.
At Age seven Selena attended an open casting call in Texas for Disney’s ‘Barney and Friends’. Here she met childhood best friend and fellow Disney channel star Demi Lovato. After landing the role of Gianna on Barney for 2 seasons, Selena had a small role in ‘Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over’. Selena was rediscovered in a worldwide Disney casting search in 2004. Following this she guest starred in popular shows like ‘The Suite Life of Zack & Cody’ and ‘Hannah Montana’, as well as many pilots like Brain Zapped that weren’t picked up. There was a breakthrough in 2007, when she landed the leading role in Disney channel hit ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’.
Selena was then a rising star. And in 2008, she was branded , “the next Miley Cyrus” this was followed by tabloid reports that there was a feud between Miley and Selena, after Miley, and friend Mandy Jiroux made a youtube video mocking Selena and Demi Lovato. Both girls denied any falling out.
It was later that year that Selena started dating Miley’s ex Nick Jonas. She appeared in the Jonas Brothers video, ‘Burnin’ up’, which fuelled the dating rumours more!
By this time Selena was filming the ‘Princess Protection Programme’ an original Disney channel flick where Selena starred alongside her childhood pal, Demi Lovato. More movies were to come as Selena played the lead character Mary, alongside Drew Seeley in ‘Another Cinderella Story’. She also scored a small voice over role in ‘Horton Hears a Who’.
Fan’s then discovered Selena’s voice as she recorded songs with the Disneymania album and collaborated with Forever the Sickest Kids in their song ‘Whoa Oh!’ She also recorded “Fly to your Heart” for the Tinker bell movie.
Her name continued to reach houses all over the world as Selena’s face was all over televisions everywhere as she became the spokesperson for Borden Milk. As well being part of a Sears ad campaign.
Selena by this time was a UNICEF ambassador, following great personal campaigns to fundraise. She then became of part of ‘Disney’s Friends for Change’.
Whilst ;Wizards Of Waverly’ place ratings continued to rocket, in 2009, Selena started to film her first breakout movie; ‘Ramona and Beezus’ For this Selena flew out to Vancouver, where she didn’t just gain a new little sister in the form of co-star Joey King, but started to date twilight werewolf Taylor Lautner who was also in Vancouver at the time. It was then announced that there would be a ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Movie!
Selena had also been designing her own clothing line, ‘Dream out loud’ which was created for Kmart stores all throughout the USA. Selena decided to pursue her music career and formed her band, ‘Selena Gomez and The Scene’. This resulted in the release of Selena’s first hit album, ‘Kiss & Tell’. ‘Kiss & Tell’ was certified platinum.
Filming then started on teen flick,’ Monte Carlo’, where Selena played the lead alongside Katie Cassidy and Leighton Meester. Selena had also managed to create a production company called ‘July Moon Productions’. Selena announced that she would be leaving ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’
Selena Gomez & the Scene realised a second album called ‘A Year Without Rain’ that certified Gold. Following that was the band’s third album, ‘When The Sun Goes Down’. Selena also hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2011.
Selena then started dating current boyfriend, pop star, Justin Bieber. She also got fans involved in developing her long awaited fragrance. Her latest film ‘Spring Breakers’ released 2012 is her most mature role to date.
Despite her earlier statements, Gomez confirmed in October 2012 that work had begun on an upcoming album. The album’s lead single, “Come & Get It”, was released on April 8, 2013. Gomez later confirmed that the album would be her solo debut album, rather than her band’s fourth album. Gomez’s debut album, Stars Dance, was released on July 23, 2013. Gomez has since confirmed that she plans to take another musical hiatus following the release of the album, and hopes to focus on her acting career.
